New Movie Sequels to See in Theatres

2/1/2023 • 5 min read

(Updated 01/10/2024)

Movie sequels are baked so deeply into filmmaking history that you cannot separate the idea of movies from the concept of sequels. While we didn't start seeing movies with a numeral designating sequel status until the '50s or '60s, the first movie sequel dates back to the early days of the silent film era.

After THE GODFATHER PART II won Best Picture, and the Star Wars movie series became the new paradigm for Hollywood, sequels became more popular than ever. But you're not here for history! You want to know what movie sequels are coming out in 2024, and what sequels are on the calendar even further out than that. Here you go: These are the sequels coming to movie theatres.

Timothée Chalamet stars as a young Willy Wonka, who finds that his plan to set up a chocolate shop will face resistance from a cabal of well-established candy makers. Read more about WONKA here. [Now Playing]

Dune: Part TwoDune: Part Two | Cinemark

At the end of the first part of Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune, the story was just starting to roll, with Paul Atreides taking a leadership role in the native Fremen population of the desert planet Arrakis. Ghostbusters: Frozen EmpireGhostbusters: Frozen Empire | Cinemark

The next GHOSTBUSTERS movie returns the action to New York City, and will set the young proteges from GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE up in the firehouse used by the classic characters. They'll have to contend with a wave of supernatural cold that is likely only the beginning of a ghostly new threat to the city. Read more about GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE here. [March 22]

Godzilla X Kong: The New EmpireGodzilla X Kong: The New Empire | Cinemark

All we've seen from this sequel to GODZILLA VS KONG is a title reveal teaser but that's enough for now. The studio says "GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE will transport audiences into the unexplored depths of a brave new world of spectacular new monsters, heroic adventurers, and awe-inspiring set pieces on a scale unlike anything ever seen before." [March 29]

Kingdom of the Planet of the ApesKingdom of the Planet of the Apes | Cinemark

Caesar led the apes to a new home at the end of WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES. There, ape clans have emerged as human civilization has fully collapsed. But one ape leader seems determined to repeat humanity's mistakes by seeking to enslave other apes in a bid for total dominance. [May 10]

FuriosaFuriosa | Cinemark

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. Despicable Me 4

Gru and the Minions are once again in the spotlight in this third sequel to DESPICABLE ME. This one is written by Mike White, who also wrote Illumination's MIGRATION. [July 3]

Deadpool 3

Deadpool migrates to Marvel Studios at last, and he’s bringing Hugh Jackman’s version of Wolverine with him. That’s all we really know about the sequel, but isn’t that enough? Read more about DEADPOOL 3 here. [July 26]

Joker: Folie à Deux

Writer/director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix reunite for a second JOKER movie. Lada Gaga plays Harley Quinn, likely with a few character tweaks that fit this particular vision of the Joker. And the production will be a musical of some kind, which sounds wild at first — until you realize that it might be the perfect way to visualize the next stage of Arthur Fleck's life. Read more about JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX here. [October 4]

Smile 2

Parker Finn returns to direct the sequel to his runaway horror hit, SMILE. We don't know the cast of the sequel yet, as this movie was dated while the actor's strike was still going, but we'll have updates soon! [October 18]

Gladiator 2

Director Ridley Scott is making GLADIATOR 2 at last. The project went into development more than 20 years ago but working out the story took a long time! Paul Mescal (AFTERSUN) looks set to star as Lucius, seen as a boy in the original movie, who now investigates his true parentage as he strives for power. [November 22]

Untitled Karate Kid Sequel

This will be, as studio Sony says, a "return to the original Karate Kid franchise," which leads us to wonder how aspects of the "Cobra Kai" series will factor into this movie. One interesting detail is that Jackie Chan, who co-starred in the 2010 reboot, will appear as well. [December 13]

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

The untold story behind Helm's Deep is told in this animated movie set hundreds of years before the great war seen in the primary LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. The tale follows the life and bloodsoaked times of its founder, Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan. [December 13]

Mufasa: The Lion King

This prequel to the CG-animated LION KING remake explores Mufasa's history. [July 5]

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The third SONIC movie comes from the returning creative team of director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. The main cast also returns, with James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, and Idris Elba all reprising their roles from the previous two movies. Look for Shadow the Hedgehog, whose voice actors has not yet been announced, to appear, too. [December 20]

M3GAN 2.0

The first outing of this techno-babysitter was an immediate hit and Universal wasted no time in pushing a sequel forward. Much of the cast and crew will reunite, and the only downside of M3GAN 2.0 is that we have to wait two years to see it. [January 17, 2025]

Captain America: Brave New World

Anthony Mackie gets to take center stage on the big screen as Captain America in the fourth film in the Cap series. Read more about CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD here. [February 14, 2025]

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two

Turns out we have longer to wait for the second half of DEAD RECKONING than originally expected. The eighth MISSION movie has been bumped back to 2025, largely thanks to the now-resolved writer's strike and ongoing actor's strike. We assume this movie will follow Ethan Hunt to the bottom of the ocean in search of the downed sub Sevastopol, but we can't begin to imagine what else might happen. [May 23, 2025]

The Black Phone 2

We don't know anything about the cast or plot of the sequel to Blumhouse and Universal's horror hit THE BLACK PHONE, but we do have a summer 2025 release date — and the idea was hatched by original story writer Joe Hill, and the movie is likely to be scripted and directed by the original duo of C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson. [June 27, 2025]

Thunderbolts

Marvel's new team-up movie isn't just the launch of a new hero group; it is very likely going to be a backdoor sequel to BLACK WIDOW. Read more about THUNDERBOLTS here. [July 25, 2025]

Avatar 3

Much of AVATAR 3 was filmed at the same time as THE WAY OF WATER, and since that second movie in James Cameron's series is now one of the highest-grossing movies ever released, the third movie's release is a certainty. AVATAR 3 will explore more of Pandora and introduce many new characters as it hits the storyline with what Cameron has described as "a wrecking ball." [December 19, 2025]

Untitled Spongebob Squarepants Sequel

A fourth feature film in the "Spongebob Squarepants" series is coming for Christmas in 2025. We don't yet have many details on the movie, though the title is rumored to be THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SEARCH FOR SQUAREPANTS. [December 19, 2025]

Maxxxine

Ti West's movie X, starring Mia Goth, was a horror hit. The follow-up/prequel, PEARL, was an oddball surprise that further enamored fans of the first movie. Now, MAXXXINE reteams West and Goth for a third exploration of their twisted shared vision as Goth's character Maxine makes her way to Los Angeles, where she might find the stardom she so desperately wants. (But we know it probably won't work out that way.) [Release Date TBA]

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

The third part of the Spider-Verse story will follow Miles Morales as he tries to forge a life path that is different from other Spiders. At the same time he'll pursue The Spot across dimensions, and their final battle is likely to be devastating. [Release Date TBA]

They Follow

A surprise sequel to the horror hit IT FOLLOWS has been announced, and it will re-team writer/director DAvid Robert Mitchell and star Maika Monroe. We don't know anything about the story, but it comes from Neon and will roll cameras in 2024. Hopefully the movie will be out in time for Halloween next year. [Release Date TBA]
