R Rated Movies
What Does “R” Mean?
In the MPAA rating system, R stands for “Restricted.” It means the film may include strong language, intense violence, sexual content, or other mature themes. Viewers under 17 (or 18 in some states) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Although the MPAA is in no way tied to rule of law—again, it’s a set of suggestions—we use it as a way to set admittance guidelines for our theatres (as do many film screening entities across the country). This is especially true when it comes to R ratings.
Cinemark’s R-Rated Movie Admission Policy
Age Requirements
• Guests must be 17 or older to attend an R rated movie alone.
• Guests under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (21 or older), who must remain in the auditorium for the entire film.
Children Under 6
• Children under 6 are not permitted in R rated movies after 6:00 p.m.
Proof of Age (Required)
To attend an R rated movie, guests may be asked to present a valid, physical photo ID.
Acceptable IDs:
• State issued driver’s license
• State identification card
• U.S. or foreign passport
• Military ID
Not Accepted
• Digital IDs (including Apple Wallet or mobile driver’s licenses)
• Photos or screenshots of IDs
• Expired IDs
• School IDs without a date of birth
Important Reminders
• IDs will be checked at the theatre and may be requested at any time.
• Each adult may only accompany their own party of minors.
• Guests 17–20 may be required to show ID, especially when purchasing tickets for others.
• Cinemark reserves the right to deny admission or remove guests who do not comply with this policy.
Why R Ratings Matter
R-rated movies often feature mature humor, graphic violence, or intense emotional themes. Examples include:
Bridesmaids (2011)
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Get Out (2017)
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Crass humor, bloody battles, scary monsters, minute-long make outs—everything’s on the table, and there’s not much of a limit. Be advised!
