Quentin Tarantino's Last Film Is The Movie Critic

2/22/2024 • 4 min read

For years, Quentin Tarantino has said that he plans to retire after his next movie, which would be his 10th feature film. No one knows for sure whether or not he's going to make good on the retirement threat, but he is definitely assembling that 10th movie. It is called THE MOVIE CRITIC. (That's a provisional title, at least, Things might change.)

True to its title, THE MOVIE CRITIC is set to follow a writer who penned movie reviews as a second string critic for a men’s adult magazine in the 1970s. Tarantino has spoken enthusiastically of this particular critic's work. It's appropriate that the guy who started out as a video store clerk, and who became one of the best known screenwriters and directors working in the business, would turn to movie criticism as a subject.

Many of the key details about the movie are still indistinct, but reports say that Tarantino and Brad Pitt will reunite for the movie. Other big stars are likely to land in the cast, too — Tarantino's movies always have incredible cast choices. Here’s everything we know about Quentin Tarantino‘s THE MOVIE CRITIC.

What's The Movie Critic Release Date?

Quentin Tarantino's next and possibly final movie does not have a release date yet. There's a good chance we will see it in 2025. Once he starts working, his projects move pretty quickly.

Is There a Trailer for Quentin Tarantino's The Movie Critic?

There is no trailer for THE MOVIE CRITIC right now. The movie has not been filmed yet!

Who's in The Movie Critic Cast?

Even the cast of THE MOVIE CRITIC is uncertain right now. Reports recently said that Brad Pitt would lead the cast as the title character, but that is not fully confirmed. More recently a report about Tom Cruise setting up a deal with Warner Bros. included mention that Cruise has pursued a role in Tarantino's movie, but we don't know anything about the character, or the role's prominence in the script.

Will Brad Pitt Play Cliff Booth in The Movie Critic?

Fan theories have mused that Brad Pitt could reprise the role of Cliff Booth for THE MOVIE CRITIC. The idea is that Pitt's ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD character was such a movie fan that he could become a critic after the end of his on-screen career.

That's a fun idea, but it also seems like a stretch. Tarantino has built ties between characters and the movies they appear in, but he hasn't had one actor play the same major character in two different movies. (KILL BILL doesn't count, as that was designed as one movie, not two.)

Is The Movie Critic Really Quentin Tarantino's Last Movie?

Tarantino says he will retire after directing ten films, so right now, it seems like yes, THE MOVIE CRITIC will be his final movie. In fact, writer Mark L. Smith, who worked on the STAR TREK script that Tarantino was developing to direct, recently said that Tarantino walked away from TREK because he didn't want it to be his last movie. (Keep in mind, this comes from the writer, not Tarantino himself.)

So what's next? Tarantino has written one book, and could focus energy on writing. Many have wondered if making a TV series would sidestep his feature film retirement. Maybe he simply wants to spend more time with his family. And we've seen many filmmakers retire only to return to feature directing several years later. (For one recent example, see Hayao Miyazak's THE BOY AND THE HERON.) Maybe we'll see that STAR TREK movie eventually!

We'll tell you more about THE MOVIE CRITIC soon!
