The Matrix Resurrections Interview: We Speak to the New Cast Members

12/23/2021 • 3 min read

After nearly 20 years, the Matrix is live once again! THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS is both a sequel and, in some ways, a reboot of the beloved franchise that began in 1999. Original co-writer and director Lana Wachowski returns as the primary creator of this fourth movie, alongside original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Reeves and Moss reprise the roles of Neo and Trinity. The two characters now face a stronger, more secure and more dangerous Matrix — not to mention their own uncertainties and a layer of conditioning that separates them from reality and one another.

Alongside Reeves and Moss are many newcomers to the franchise, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (taking over as Morpheus), Jessica Henwick (Bugs), Jonathan Groff (Smith), and Priyanka Chopra (Sati). Cinemark had a chance to sit down with these new players, and we asked how it feels to join the cast for the fourth MATRIX movie.

"I like to refer back to my younger self and to kinda tap him on the shoulder and say ‘hey little man, you in the Matrix,'" said Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. "[It's] really, really exciting that I can be one of the people on earth that can look in the mirror and say you're in the Matrix and it's a real thing."

"It’s so exciting, I remember being in my late teens, 16, 17 when I watched the first one and I remember how it shifted pop culture and how we saw movies and my expectations of movies shifted. I was like wow, your imagination can be really big," Chopra said.

When asked if they’d take the blue or red pill in real life, Henwick said she and Gross were red pillers. But Abdul-Mateen II chose a different path. "I’ll take the blue pill man, like, give me the blue pill because life is good, life is grand. Blue pill me baby!" he said.
