Tenet: A Larger-Than-Life Spectacle

Tenet: A Larger-Than-Life Spectacle

(Updated 08/25/2020)

After months of lockdown we are excited to reopen our theatres! We're ready for larger-than-life spectacle, and that's precisely what Christopher Nolan‘s TENET was created to offer.

The director's new movie is an action-packed espionage mystery with an intriguing time-manipulating component. Robert Pattinson and John David Washington star alongside a collection of actors featuring more people who are new to Nolan's movies and at least one, Michael Caine, who is a long-time regular. It would have been one of the biggest movie events of the year if this was a normal year — and things being what they are, it is a lot more than that.

We'll see something new

Tenet's new ideas

Christopher Nolan’s movies always deliver the unexpected, even in the context of something as familiar with a war movie, like DUNKIRK, or superhero movies, like the Batman series. INCEPTION and INTERSTELLAR pushed our understanding of what science-fiction has been harsh movies could be, and then delivered throws were still thinking about yours later.

The story is an engaging mystery

What is Tenet about?

One of the most fun things about Christopher Nolan movies is that he maintains as much of a sense of mystery as possible before they actually get to movie theatres. The secrecy around TENET has been as tight as a secret government project, if not more so. All we know about the story is that it is "an action epic evolving from the world of international espionage." Based on the trailer there seems to be a time-travel aspect as well, but right now that's literally all we know.

Nolan creates for the theatrical experience

Christopher Nolan and the theatrical experience

Christopher Nolan loves going to the movie theater, and a passion is evident in all of his movies. There are more great movies and TV shows now than ever, but many are not truly made to take advantage of everything the movie theatre offers. They have scope, ambition, memorable concepts and characters that live inside you for years after the credits roll. Nolan makes immersive movies that we want to live in even when the events they depict are difficult or horrible, and that's really saying something.

Images that are larger than life

Christopher Nolan creates images that are larger than life

Christopher Nolan shoots on large format film to create images of exceptional clarity and detail. It's not just a spectacle; his approach is designed to show off the unique characters and world in each movie. Nolan could have created a regular bank heist for the opening of THE DARK KNIGHT. Instead, he used IMAX film to visualize that sequence as a showstopper that still stands apart from anything else in a superhero movie.

Christopher Nolan values everything that movie theatres represent

Christopher Nolan values movie theaters

In a recent editorial published in the Washington Post, Christopher Nolan wrote, "when people think about movies, their minds first go to the stars, the studios, the glamour. But the movie business is about everybody: the people working the concession stands, running the equipment, taking tickets, booking movies, selling advertising and cleaning bathrooms in local theaters. Regular people, many paid hourly wages rather than a salary, earn a living running the most affordable and democratic of our community gathering places."
